• If your soil is clay, there's a good chance it's compacted, so when new roots try to develop, they grow closer to the surface, and are not thick, deep, or drought resistant. Roots must displace the soil as they grow, and compacted soil limits their growth. Limited roots means you need to water more - and water is expensive.

• Because clay soil compacts with winter rain and then shrinks again due to drying in summer, (think about cracks in dry mud), soil compaction is constantly happening. This limits the regrowth process that happens in spring and again in fall.
  

• Lawn aeration (plugging)  reduces soil pressure, allowing new roots to penetrate far deeper. Deeper roots means  your lawn will have a more drought resistant rooting system that requires less water to stay green.

• In 4 to 6 months, the holes from lawn aeration are gone, so lawn aeration needs to be repeated. This allows the seasonal root growth spurt to grow deeper more drought resistant roots.
  

• When there's clay soil, soil compaction is a continuous process.
